Sunday, January 26 Cooking Club - Italian Theme: Italian. After consulting with my Italian expert, it was suggested a spaghttati (which my understanding is lots of spaghetti with different kinds of sauces and other yummy sides). I also wanted to come up with something a little easier if we are going to watch any part of the game. So I have several sauce recipes and we also need some salad, antipasta, dessert, bread, etc. Please RSVP by Wednesday so I can get a headcount (and know what you would like to cook) and please be willing to financially contribute by either buying groceries or chipping in some moola.

Tuesday, January 28 Intergenerational Healing Touch Group The Healing Touch Group is a wonderful and welcoming gathering of folks interested in creating a safe space for sharing the natural healing power of human touch. No professional massage experience is necessary. If you like to give and receive theraputic and spiritual bodywork, such as massage or Reiki, come join us. Each evening begins with a centering and relaxing meditation. Please plan to arrive at 7:00, so that we may begin with a guided meditation promptly at 7:30. Late arrival would be disruptive to the group once we begin, so the doors may be closed at that point.

Saturday, February 1 Convivium Musicum Concert You are cordially invited to a concert by the Convivium Musicum, an eighteen-voice Renaissance choir. The January concert season features Spanish music - my favorite. Tickets are $15, $8 for students. Let me know if you have any questions. Please RSVP to Gretchen by the Wednesday before (1/29). Hope to see you there!

Saturday, February 1 Nameless Coffehouse The Nameless Coffeehouse resents a triple bill, performing are singer/songwriter Chris Elliott, folksinger Scott Alarik, and folk/jazz artist Deb Pasternak. Hosting the show will be local songwriter Mark Stepakoff. The concert begins at 8 PM, and there is a suggested donation of $8. The Nameless Coffeehouse presents concerts on the first Saturday of each month from September-June. In its thirty-five year history, The Nameless Coffeehouse has been a launching pad for many well known folk (and other) performers including Tracy Chapman, Patty Larkin, The Story, Ellis Paul, Bob Franke, Ric Ocasek, and comedians Andy Kaufman and Jay Leno. The mission of the coffeehouse has always been to provide a stage for up and coming performers as well as established artists.

Monday, February 3 Intergenerational Women's Discussion Group Topic: SELF-ESTEEM How timely!! :) February often conjures images of hearts and romantic adoration in the minds of many as they think of upcoming Valentine's Day. Some people making efforts to express (and expect) feelings of adoration or infatuation; some finding themselves with frustrating feelings of longing. What better time for us to talk about the most important people in the world to each of us -- OURSELVES!! As author and intuitive healer, Carolyn Myss, puts it, "How we feel about ourselves, whether we respect ourselves, determines the quality of our life, our capacity to succeed in relationships, business, health and growth. Self-understanding and acceptance, the bond we form with ourselves, is in many ways the most crucial spiritual challenge we face." What does having a 'sense of self' mean to you? How does your self-concept affect your ways of relating in the world (to yourself and to other people)? Women of all ages are warmly invited to come join the Women's Discussion Group on February 3rd for an empowering and meaningful discussion about SELF-ESTEEM. A bit about the women of the group: the WDG consists of members and friends of First Parish who meet to share lively conversation and fellowship, on the first Mondays of each month. We welcome all ages and religious perspectives and aim to make our group inclusive to any woman who would like to take part in our meetings. Our organizational structure is kind of a team-work model and we have stolen as many ideas as we can from the Men's Discussion Group (thanks, guys). Participation is encouraged- all are invited to lead discussions, to bring snacks, to sit and listen, or some combination of all these.

Wednesday, February 5 Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group - "Evil" The Men's Discussion Group meets every first Wednesday in the Barn Room, 7:00-7:30 for socializing; 7:30-9:20 discussion. Our next regular meeting will be Feb. 5; I will facilitate a discussion about "Evil". In hearing about so many bad things happening around the world, and the term "Axis of Evil" spoken almost daily, it poses the question about "What is evil?" How do we as Unitarian Universalists and individual men understand evil. Given our Universalist heritage of believing that no person is destined to hell, and that all people are inherently good, how do we come to grips with the current situation in the world. Come ready to talk and share your thoughts. Facilitator: Ken Mattsson

Friday, February 7 Swing Dancing Come dust off your dancin' shoes and dance like your grandparents did back in the day! (Or at least have fun trying!) We will be going to Swing City in West Cambridge. Dress is "casual to vintage" and you don't need to come with a partner. Beginner lessons are from 7:30-8:30. Dancing is from 8:30-12:30. The cover charge is $10, or $8 for students with i.d. It's kind of expensive, but this place is worth it! The atmosphere is very laid back and there are dancers of all skill levels there. There is ample parking across the street from Swing City. Contact Dave if you need a ride.

This is not exclusively a UU event -- it's for all young adults who may be interested in live music, hot drinks on a cold night, and warm community with friends. Sunday, February 9 Men's Discussion Group Special Meeting What can UU men do to prevent domestic abuse? All men are invited to a special meeting of the Men's Discussion Group to begin to answer this question. The MDG presents guest facilitators Caitlin O'Brien and Craig Norberg-Bohm. Caitlin, the Director of Renewal House, a program of the UUA Urban Ministry, and Craig, from the Jane Doe Men's Initiative, will lead us in a discussion about violence prevention and the obstacles and fears that must be overcome by those who would act to prevent violence. In the second part of the meeting, they will outline a proposal to include us in the growing network of men's groups who are partnering with Renewal House to perform service toward this end. After ample time to discuss what this partnership might look like, we will have about 20 minutes at the end to share initial impressions of the proposal with each other, without Caitlin and Craig present. We will reach a final decision on whether a partnership with Renewal House is right for our group at our regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, March 6.

Thursday, February 27 YAG Spiritual Discussion
Theme: Are You More Unitarian or Universalist? As UUs, and for many of us as *new* UUs, we don't give a whole lot of thought to the different things that the two distinct traditions of Unitarianism and Universalism bring to UUism as a whole. Historically, Unitarians have been more concerned with the search for the truth and an exploration of their own theology, while Universalists are more concerned with social justice and works which make our present life sacred. The Unitarians have been the upper-class Boston intellectuals, while the Universalists have been the working-class organizers. Come this Thursday for a discussion of the two aspects of our common faith, and share where you feel you are on the U<-->U spectrum! Since we'll be touching on some key components of our faith, this might be a good event to which to bring a friend who is interested in learning about UUism. Feel free to contact me with any questions....
