Bring a Friend Sunday

Do you have a friend who you have always felt like, "Gee, you're a UU and you don't even know it." Well this is the service for them. We are inviting members to bring a friend and the service will be perfect for orienting them to what this UUism is all about. There will also be a question answer session after church with one of the ministerial staff.

Time: 10:30am
Location:First Parish

Ushering

YAG has agreed to provide ushers and snacks on September 29 and February 9. 4 ushers are needed and some others to provide snacks for social hour (the YAG budget can reimburse you for this if you contact someone on the wheel committee). Pick a friend or two and volunteer! Please contact the contact below:

YAG Ushering Q&A:

What do I do?

  • Fold orders of service
  • Pass out orders of service
  • Pass out offertory plates
  • 1 person helps the deacon count the money
  • additional YAGers bring snacks for social hour
When?
Arrive 9:30-9:45; volunteer until offertory is passed out (a little longer for person who helps count money)

Who do I report to?
The deacon. There is one deacon on duty each Sunday. They rotate. The deacons are: David Ray, Margaret Drury, Andi Whitaker, and Ann Daily. It will be clear because they are always there helping to fold the orders of service.

The deacon for this particular day is Ann Daily. In order to get the names in the order of service, we have to provide names of volunteer ushers to the church by Wednesday @ noon.

Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group

Topic: "Love: How do we know it and how do we show it?"

Victor Hugo wrote, "To love another person is to see the face of God." Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "Man must evolve for all human conflict a method which rejects revenge, aggression and retaliation. the foundation of such a method is love." And according to Charlie Brown, "Nothing takes the taste out of peanut butter quite like unrequited love."

Love is arguable what people want most.
Unfortunately, part of the human conditions is getting our signals crossed. If love is the signal we want most, it must also be the signal we most often cross. As men, what signal do we want when it comes to love? What signal do we feel most comfortable sending? What signal do we think our loved ones want sent? And, most importantly, how can love ever save the world?

Please join us for a discussion of Love. It will provide you with at least variety of perspectives and may help you better understand what you want most.

Intergenerational Women's Discussion Group

The First Parish Intergenerational Women’s Discussion Group meets Monday October 7th from 7-9 PM at First Parish in the Paine Room. This month’s topic is “Transition and Change.” Women of all ages are warmly invited to attend! Start the fall season with an engaging discussion about changes of all kinds in our lives-- personal, political, spiritual-- and how we cope with these transitions. The evening will include some readings chosen by the facilitators, and open discussion. If you have questions, need more information, or have a discussion topic you would like to add to our ever-evolving list, please contact Kris Fikkan at 781-646-6840 or at kfikkan@uua.org. A bit about the women of the group: the “WDG” consists of members and friends of First Parish who meet to share lively conversation and fellowship, once a month. We welcome all ages and religious perspectives and aim to make our group inclusive to any woman who would like to take part in our meetings. Our organizational structure is kind of a team-work model and we have stolen as many ideas as we can from the Men’s Discussion Group (thanks, guys). Participation is encouraged—all are invited to lead discussions, to bring snacks, to sit and listen, or some combination of all these.

Intergenerational Healing Touch Group

The Healing Touch Group is a wonderful and welcoming gathering of folks interested in creating a safe space for sharing the natural healing power of human touch. No professional massage experience is necessary. If you like to give and receive theraputic and spiritual bodywork, such as massage or Reiki, come join us. Each evening begins with a centering and relaxing meditation.

The Healing Touch Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month.

Please plan to arrive at 7:00, so that we may begin with a guided meditation promptly at 7:30. Late arrival would be disruptive to the group once we begin, so the doors may be closed at that point.

Cookie Baking

Come bake (and sample) cookies with your friends! On Sunday, October 13, YAG will be hosting coffee hour. We'll be providing snacks and (for the first time) bringing along some fair trade coffee (A YAG, social action project; see social action web page) to be served at coffee hour. Your friendly, neighborhood social action reps will take care of the coffee part, but on Saturday, October 12, we need your help baking some treats. We figured that with a group of people, we'd be likely to make quite a few cookies, so we've also promised to donate some of the treats to Tuesday meals that same week. So all you aspiring and talented cooks and bakers out there, we need your ideas and your help! Please RSVP if you think you'll be able to make it. Also indicate whether you'd be able to either a) come with a cookie recipe and bring along the ingredients we'll need b) bring along something that's halfway done (like dough for cookies that's been refrigerated) that you need help shaping, cutting out or decorating, or c)bring some extra supplies like an extra bowl or cookie sheet. None of this is required -- you can just show up and help us -- although an extra bowl or cookie sheet would be greatly appreciated. Since this is likely to run into dinnertime, something *small* and dinnerlike (i.e. not sweet) will be provided, but don't come too, too hungry as we'll be mostly baking. Fair trade coffee will be served to go along with the cookies we sample.

Worship

Circle Worship time has come again!

“Come dream a dream with me… that I might know your mind”

Dreams are our visions, hopes and aspirations for the present and future. What do we dream about in our lives and what is the power of those visions? How can we guide our dreams to reality? The power of articulating them in community and the experience of sharing your vision with another person can be empowering, transformative, and faith building. We do not often take the time to honor the beauty and the power that exists in communicating our dreams. Come take time to reflect on what it is you are dreaming about and hear the visions of those in your community.

I would *love* for people to participate in putting on the worship so if you would like to help out by sharing a reading, story or song, (either one of your own or one I’ve prepared) please contact me.

Thanks and hope to see you Thursday!

Melissa Quirk

What is circle worship?
Circle worship is a traditional form of worship drawn from many ancient traditions and practiced regularly today by Pagans, Quakers, and many Unitarian Universalists. Rather than focusing around a single speaker or leader, circle worship emphasizes the shared experiences of all participants. A "leader" in such a worship takes responsibility for creating an appropriate safe space where worshippers are able to both rely on the group for security and to aid in supporting eachother. No one is required to participate in ways that make them uncomfortable, but each person has the potential to sanctify the space further with their words and actions.

Why do we have separate Young Adult worships?
Because of the "shared experience" model of circle worship, often the group gains focus when drawing from similar life stage experiences. The experience of worship is greatly dependent on a persons’ ability to trust the group and themselves. Worship builds on the other community building activities that young adults participate in. Additionally, the ability to articulate our spirituality for ourselves is at the core of Unitarian Universalist principles and the exercise of doing this on a regular basis in young adult community fertilizes the ongoing growth of our living tradition.

Trick or Treating for Cans

You are never too old for Trick or Treating! So, throw on that black, pointy hat, hop on your broom, and fly over to the church on Halloween from 5:30 to 7:30 to trick or treat for Project Soup, a local food pantry. We will meander in groups around the neighborhood pulling red wagons and trick or treating for cans. (And who knows? Maybe we'll collect some candy along the way, too!)

We will meet on Monday or Tuesday this week to pass out flyers in the neighborhood we plan on haunting. If you are interested, please let me know as soon as possible. You may call me at 617-746-1860 or email me at skratzig@hotmail.com. Abby Gitlitz and I would like to know how large of an area we can plan to cover.

Also, if you have a wagon or other rollable can collecting object to lend to the cause, please let us know. We are also looking for a couple of people with cars who would be willing to station it at a location within the neighborhood so that we can have a drop-off point for cans once the wagon becomes too full. Thanks!

Have a happy, haunted weekend!

Suzy and Abby

Update:
