Cambridge Ecumenical Service or Arlington Street Church

No service at First Parish today. You have two choices:

Once a year, the Cambridge churches hold a joint ecumenical service. This year it is at St. James Church near Porter Square. 1991 Massachusetts Avenue, Porter Square.

Or you can join some of us to visit the Arlington Street Church and have lunch with their Young Adult Group after their service. If you choose this option, either go directly to ASC (right near the Arlington T Stop on the Green Line) or meet at the steps of First Parish at 9:45 and take the subway down together.

Shakespeare in the Park : Macbeth

Every year, the not-for-profit Commonwealth Shakespeare Company does completely free performaces on the dowtown commons. This year, Macbeth!

The seating is on the lawn and after dusk, so dress accordingly. I'll be bringing a blanket, but the more are definitely welcome. It maybe be a good idea to pack dinner or grab food on the way from the various places in the area. The intermission is a bit to short to run somewhere, wait in line, and not miss a bit of the show.

The show starts at 8pm and will run for about 2 hours and 45 minutes, with the 15 minute intermission. More information can be found at their website.

We will be meeting between the doors to the Park Street T stop at 7pm in hopes of getting better seats. It would be awesome if someone who works in the area could volunteer to scout out and claim a spot while the rest of are meeting up.

Spiritual Discussion: Fate, Coincidence, and Circumstance

Topic: Fate, Coincidence, and Circumstance

in my life, there have definitely been themes formed by seemingly random and disconnected events, and i've never been sure how to address them. sometimes the incredibly improbable is harder to accept than belief in fate. this thursday, i'd like us to try and answer these questions:

are there patterns in coincidence?
can significance be found, even without belief in fate?

YAG spiritual discussions are an opportunity share conversation with others in your age range interested in examining and reflecting upon connections between everyday practices and the spiritual elements of our lives. Conversations are enhanced by having people with a diversity of experiences, opinions, and identities (racial, cultural, ethnic, gender, and sexual) contribute. Participants with a variety of viewpoints are welcome and encouraged!

Worship

WHAT IS CIRCLE WORSHIP? Circle worship is a traditional form of worship drawn from many ancient traditions and practiced regularly today by Pagans, Quakers, and many Unitarian Universalists. Rather than focusing around a single speaker or leader, circle worship emphasizes the shared experiences of all participants. A "leader" in such a worship takes responsibility for creating an appropriate safe space where worshippers are able to both rely on the group for security and to aid in supporting each other. No one is required to participate in ways that make them uncomfortable, but each person has the potential to sanctify the space further with their words and actions.

WHY DO WE HAVE SEPARATE YOUNG ADULT WORSHIPS? Because of the "shared experience" model of circle worship, often the group gains focus when drawing from similar life stage experiences. The experience of worship is greatly dependent on a persons' ability to trust the group and themselves. Worship builds on the other community building activities that young adults participate in. Additionally, the ability to articulate our spirituality for ourselves is at the core of Unitarian Universalist principles and the exercise of doing this on a regular basis in young adult community fertilizes the ongoing growth of our living tradition.

Nantucket Island

Hey Summer-fun Folks!

At long last, I’m thinking seriously about Labor Day Weekend. I sent out an e-mail a while back about doing a long weekend on Nantucket Island. I had originally planned to make a group reservation, but that got too complicated as payment needs to be made in advance, cancellations are difficult, etc. So, if you would like to come, YOU need to call to make a reservation for yourself (and you can cancel up to 48 hours in advance). Call the Nantucket Youth Hostel office at 1.888.901.2084, tell them the dates you’d like (I’ll be there Friday night – Monday morning; August 29-September 1st), the number of people, and your name. You will also need a credit card to hold your reservation. Approximate cost is $25/night/person.

For more hostel information, refer to: http://63.70.211.212/cfdocs/hostels.cfm?CITY=Nantucket.

Nantucket activities include beaching, biking, eating, shopping, schlepping out to the distance lighthouses, kayaking, visiting the UU church, etc.

The hostel does have space, so call NOW as they’ll probably fill up.

Very basic overview: drive to Hyannis, ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket Island, rent bike on island (if you didn’t bring one), food can be purchased at the supermarket for preparation in hostel kitchen, linens provided by hostel (NO sleeping bags!), hostels is dorm-style (i.e. multiple bunk-beds/room) right by the beach, etc.

If you plan to come, let me know so that we can figure out transportation down to Hyannis (where the ferry leaves from). Questions, comments? Let me know!
