Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group

Men, Nature, and Mastering the Elements

Traditionally in Western civilization since at least the Enlightenment, men have related to nature and the world around them through science. This relation meant an emphasis on objectivity, experimentation, mastery, and exploitation of nature and the worlds around humanity.

With the plurality of the world these days, however; ideas, attitudes, cultures, and beliefs intersect in many ways that can't always get predicted. The Men's Discussion Group will come together to discuss our own concepts of man, nature, and man's relation to nature and the world. It most assuredly will provide some enlightenment into this topic.

Time: 7:00PM - gathering and socializing 7:30 PM - discussion
Location:First Parish in Harvard Square, the Barn Room

Chocolate Making

Do you like chocolate? Would you like to know how to make handmade chocolates? Do molds excite you (plastic ones that is, not the type that grow)? Would you like to take home at least a pound of chocolate for your own consumption, or make a gift of chocolates for someone special? Well, here is your chance!

We will be making solid and filled chocolates, as well as suckers. I will bring the chocolates, molds, and other such neccesities. You will bring $3 to chip in for the supplies, and something to bring your chocolates home in (i.e. tupperware, gift boxes, etc.). All participants must RSVP, or I won't know what supplies to buy. Please also let me know whether you like milk, dark or white chocolate best.

Volunteer Farming

This even has been cancelled for this month. Join us next month.

Do you think that food comes from the grocery store? Come work on an organic farm for the afternoon and remember where it really comes from! We will be working that day, so please wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Depending on what needs the farm has, we may be weeding, transplanting, doing farm clean up, harvesting, or a combination of these tasks.

Waltham Fields Community farm donates 40% of the produce to food Pantries and soup kitchens. The other 60% is harvested for its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program.

http://www.communityfarms.org/

If it rains that day, we will not go to the farm. No rain date this month.

Time: 1:30 P.M.-5:00 P.M. Meet at the church between 12:45 and 1:00 PM. Or, we'll go over together after lunch.

Worship

Theme: The Rain

Water is literally our lifeblood. Our mostly-water blood starts at the heart, to which eventually it must return. In this same way the earth nourishes itself with water, which falls as rain, returns to the lakes and oceans, evaporates, and falls again. Rain heals, grows, mixes, fertilizes... but the absence or excessive presence of rain can be disastrous. Small wonder that rain is one of the earliest subjects of worship there is... because "without rain," says Headliner from Arrested Development, "there's no 'me' and there's no 'you'!"

Come pay homage to the rain gods, share in rain rituals, and bring your own testimonials about rain's spiritual substance.

Logistical stuff: I'm planning this worship myself, but I would love it if I could have some other people's energy in the presentation. This could be as simple as reading something I give you, or choosing your own reading. Let me know if you'd like to do either of those things.

Also, CAUTION: You might get "rained on" a little in the course of the worship. You won't be soaked, but you might not want to wear anything that can't get wet... :)

About: On the third Thursday of each month, the Cambridge Young Adult Group gathers at First Parish to worship in their own unique way. Each month, the worship is led by a different member of YAG, and can be about any theme, and can take any format. A worship could be readings and sharing, or it could involve dancing, singing, silence, food, or whatever you like! If you are interested in leading a worship, contact worship coordinators Ethan Field and Suzy Kratzig.

Hike Mt. Washington

Here's an activity that will really get our blood pumping! Let's hike Up Mt. Washington! Many New Englanders boast that their CAR made it to the top of Mt. Washington. So let's go one up on them and hike it. There are a few different trails we can take, and we can come to a consensus about which one will be best as a group.

WE WILL LEAVE BOSTON AT 6AM SHARP. This hike will take all day. We probably won't get back to Boston until about 9PM. It will take three hours to drive each way, and the rest of the time we will spend hiking.

Plan to bring food, water, and warm clothes. Meeting place TBD.

Here is some info to keep you anxiously anticipating the hike:

Mt Washington is the highest peak in the northeastern United States (6,288 feet above sea level).

YOU MUST BRING WARM CLOTHES. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH. If you don't believe me, here are some facts that I learned from the www.mountwashington.com website:

The average wind chill in August at the summit is 25 degrees. But don't worry, we only have a 19% chance of hurricane-force winds, and only a mere 3% chance of 100+ MPH winds in August.

"Notorious for its frequent bad weather conditions, Mt. Washington's climate can rival that of Antarctica. The average annual temperature on the summit is only 26.5 °F, with the records being -47 °F and 72 °F. On average, 256 inches of snow falls each year, with the seasonal maximum being 566 inches. The annual mean wind speed is gale-force at 35.3 MPH, and hurricane-force winds occur every third day (on average). And it was here, on the roof of what is now the Stage Office, where the world's highest wind speed was ever recorded: 231 MPH."
