Wednesday, July 3 Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group TOPIC: "Libertarianism, Socialism, and the Role of Government" The Republicans are conservative, the Democrats are liberal: this much you know by heart. But what does that mean, anyway? Each party supports your access to some things -- abortions, guns, same sex partners, more of your paycheck -- and attempts to take away your access to others. Your access to certain, party-approved things are also known as your "rights". Sometimes the packages of "rights" presented by the two major parties seem pretty arbitrary. There's another way to sort out the issues: the big government/small government split. Champions of the small government are the Libertarians, who seek to preserve the rights of the individual to just about anything --abortions and guns alike -- on the grounds that the government has no business meddling in anything but the absolute minimum of your affairs. On the other side are the socialists (perhaps best represented in this country by the Greens?) who envision a highly functioning, integrated society on a national scale, and see government as a useful tool towards this end. Both of these forces -- Libertarianism and Socialism -- can be seen at work in each of the major parties of any democratic nation. What is, or should be, the role of government in the United States in 2002? Come hash this out with us on Independence Day Eve.

Thursday, July 4 Fireworks Wave your flags! Put on your red, white, and blue! Sing the Star Spangled Banner! Come to the church on the 4th at 4:00, and then we'll march over to join the masses (probably by the river at MIT) and watch fireworks together! Bring a picnic dinner, some blankets, and anything else.

Friday, July 5 Potluck Our first young adult potluck of MANY! If there's one thing young adults like, it's free food! Well, almost free. Bring a dish to share with others. Cooking for people with special food needs is a plus... or you could just bring that leftover pig carcass from the Independence Day party the day before! We'll have access to the kitchen... but in the interest of keeping things clean and simple, it's probably best if you bring the food in pots which can be thrown on the stove, etc. We will have paper plates & such, but bringing ladles and other serving items will get you mad props from the Eth-Meister

Sunday, July 7 Movie: Life of Brian Monty Python's "Life of Brian" is the story of Brian, who was born in the manger next to Jesus. It's a funny look at relgions, faith, belief, and...aliens. I've been thinking that this would be a great movie to watch with a bunch of UUs since it really does have some very valid points to make about religions and their origins. So let's wrap up a nice long July 4th weekend with a funny/thoughtful movie together. Now, even if you think you don't like Monty Python, i urge you to give this movie a chance. It is not as inanely silly as some of their other efforts. I promise you, you'll enjoy this movie. I will try to coordinate rides so please contact me if you need one or have one to give. However, i will also be gone hiking this weekend from friday to sunday afternoon, so if people think they are coming to my place and wouldn't mind offering up rides to the list, that would be appreciated, so that people can find ways up here. Otherwise, if you need a ride feel free to give me a call and leave a message and i'll try to coordinate a ride for you when i get back on sunday afternoon.

Friday, July 12 Spontaneous Disclosure & Acceptance Workshop Experience disclosing parts of yourself spontaneously with welcoming and acceptance. Please try to come without any expectations or plans, as I want to stress the spontaneous side of this exercise. Think of it as an exercise in trusting and accepting the world around you, two characteristics that can help us all enjoy and help the world better together.

Saturday, July 13 Murder Mystery Party The Renowned Poet, Flabbius Corpus, invites you to celebrate the completion of his newest work "Rome Wasn't Bilked in a Day". Having mentioned your name in his epic poem, Flabbius invites you to a gathering and the premiere recitation of this historic work on Saturday, 13 July at the 7th hour. (Finery preferred dress.) To play a character in this murder mystery, please RSVP by Wednesday, July 10. First come, first serve. I invite everyone, character or not, to dress up and come. Guess who done it!!! 7/9 email update: Hi folks, A few more details about this weekend's murdery myster party. Please RSVP by tomorrow [July 10] if you would like a role (and there a few male roles left). Also, if you could help by bringing some food or drink that would be awesome since I will most likely be getting home 2 seconds before this starts. Let me know if you are willing to help with this.

Sunday, July 14 Volunteer at Rosie's Place Come serve dinner to the guests of Rosie's Place on Sunday, July 14th. We'll be preparing, serving, and cleaning up from 4pm until 8pm. Don't know much about Rosie's Place? If you're picturing a dark, depressing and dilapidated little building full of unhappy people, you are wrong, wrong, wrong! Rosie's Place has got a really great facility - including an incredible dining room and newly renovated kitchen. (Any aspiring cook would be inspired!) There are kids play, women laughing and chatting, activities going on etc. Briefly, Rosie's Place started years ago when there were no organizations in Boston serving underprivleged women. In fact, the founder began the organization after seeing women dressed up as men in order to enter the Pine Street Inn. Since then, it has grown to a bustling organization with multiple programs! Programs include meals (lunch and dinner), a food pantry (where guests choose what they need - as opposed to being handed a pre-packed bag), clothing closet (full of quality options), toiletry distribution, AA meetings, computer access (especially for resume writing), 20 emergency beds (which clients may use for a 2 week minimum - no waiting in line each day), 3 additional permanent facilities for elderly women and women with HIV/AIDS, jewelry making for fun and profit, etc.! In additional, there is a movement to begin ESL courses. They are ALWAYS looking for volunteers - especially during the summer when the college students leave! (And, unlike some other facilities for women, men are allowed to volunteer, also.) Finally, if we all enjoy ourselves, maybe we'd consider the possibility of CATERING the meal later in the summer. So, after the YAG planning meeting on July 14th, we hope to see you at Rosie's Place at 4pm! Please let me know if you plan to attend so that we can tell Rosie's Place how many to expect. Questions? Feel free to contact Kendra, Lauren or Valentina.

Tuesday, July 16 Woship Theme: AMAZEMENT AND WONDER Come find your spiritual center in a worship environment more suited to young adults than the Sunday service. This month, we deal with the indescribable feeling of amazement and wonder we get when we are in contact with something which transcends ourselves (though that's just one of many ways to think of it!) Come and share (voluntarily) a time when *you* felt a sense of absolute wonder or amazement

Saturday, July 20 Creative Sharing Night Bring a guitar, bring two. Bring a poem that you've written, or a passage from a piece of literature that you like. Bring a painting that you've made or some crayons to draw with. Dance for us. Bring a treat for people to munch on that you've made. Note, no pressure to prepare something, you can just enjoy the evening. Gather together in a friendly environment to share things with other people. Whether it's something that you've created or just something that you admire: share it with us. Examples from past experience: singing songs, bringing pastries, reading passages from books, showing off a quilt that someone made, dancing, performing a monologue or a scene, reading a poem. Feel free to use one of these or come up with your own. I will coordinate rides so please contact me if you need one or have one to give.

Sunday, July 21 Volunteer Farming Volunteer Farming at Waltham Fields Community Farm Do you think that food comes from the grocery store? Come work on an organic farm for the afternoon and remember where it really comes from! We will be working that day, so please wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Depending on what needs the farm has, we may be weeding, transplanting, doing farm clean up, harvesting, or a combination of these tasks. Waltham Fields Community farm donates 40% of the produce to food pantries and soup kitchens. The other 60% is harvested for its CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program. http://www.communityfarms.org/ I will need to have an idea of how many people are going, so please let me know by July 18 if you are coming or even if you are possibly coming. Rides leaving from First Parish after lunch can be arranged.
