Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group

"Why Do We Worship Together"

The topic of this discussion might be better phrased: "Duh, if you can believe anything you want, why do you go to church?" Most of us would answer something vague about 'community' and look a little uncomfortable. When I came back from Tanzania, where there are no UU congregations, I found myself more able to answer this question than I was when I left... but I still have many questions.

This discussion should also bring out the true intergenerational aspects of the group -- what do folks in their 60s get out of worship that is different from folks in their 20s?

Come, worship, and discuss with us this Wednesday.

Time: 7:00 pm Gathering

Planning Meeting

This will be an important planning meeting you will not want to miss. The young adult structuring committee will be presenting the results of last fall’s conference on how to change the organizational structure of YAG. Many changes are in the works! We will also be planning July events and will need people to host events. Of particular interest is continuing to have community service and spiritual events on our calendar. If you have ideas, please come forward!

Volunteer at Cambridge River Music Festival

The Cambridge River Music Festival takes place along Memorial Drive, from Central to Harvard and includes live gospel, jazz, folk and world music plus dance performances. We will be most likely volunteering at an information booth and helping out with various tasks. After our volunteer shift is over we can wander off and enjoy the festival or make plans to head off to Creative Sharing Night (see below).

More info on the festival: http://www.ci.cambridge.ma.us/~CAC

Time: 11:15AM
Location:Meet at front steps of church at 11:15 AM.

Creative Sharing Night

Bring a guitar, bring two. Bring a poem that you've written, or a passage from a piece of literature that you like. Bring a painting that you've made or some crayons to draw with. Dance for us. Bring a treat for people to munch on that you've made.

Gather together in a friendly environment to share things with other people. Whether it's something that you've created or just something that you admire: share it with us.

Examples from past experience: singing songs, bringing pastries, reading passages from books, showing off a quilt that someone made, dancing, performing a monologue or a scene, reading a poem. Feel free to use one of these or come up with your own.

Not terribly accessible by public transportation, rides can be provided (please contact Evan).

Time: 6:30pm
Location:Evan Bernstein's place

Rollerblading

Bring your blades or rent a pair to skate along the Charles River. A strip of Memorial Drive is closed off to cars, which allows for the inexperienced to make use of the flat terrain or the more experienced to pick up speed on the wide track. Rollerblades an be rented for $15 at a place in Harvard Square. There was this summer a table with half off coupons on the corner of JFK/Memorial Drive.

Time: 1PM (After lunch-if you don’t make it to lunch and can’t find us, meet at the front steps of the church @ 1PM; we will send someone to look for people there)

Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group

TOPIC: "Libertarianism, Socialism, and the Role of Government"

The Republicans are conservative, the Democrats are liberal: this much you know by heart. But what does that mean, anyway? Each party supports your access to some things -- abortions, guns, same sex partners, more of your paycheck -- and attempts to take away your access to others. Your access to certain, party-approved things are also known as your "rights". Sometimes the packages of "rights" presented by the two major parties seem pretty arbitrary.

There's another way to sort out the issues: the big government/small government split. Champions of the small government are the Libertarians, who seek to preserve the rights of the individual to just about anything --abortions and guns alike -- on the grounds that the government has no business meddling in anything but the absolute minimum of your affairs. On the other side are the socialists (perhaps best represented in this country by the Greens?) who envision a highly functioning, integrated society on a national scale, and see government as a useful tool towards this end. Both of these forces -- Libertarianism and Socialism -- can be seen at work in each of the major parties of any democratic nation.

What is, or should be, the role of government in the United States in 2002? Come hash this out with us on Independence Day Eve.

Fireworks

Wave your flags! Put on your red, white, and blue! Sing the Star Spangled Banner! Come to the church on the 4th at 4:00, and then we'll march over to join the masses (probably by the river at MIT) and watch fireworks together! Bring a picnic dinner, some blankets, and anything else.

Friday, July 5

Potluck

Our first young adult potluck of MANY! If there's one thing young adults like, it's free food! Well, almost free. Bring a dish to share with others. Cooking for people with special food needs is a plus... or you could just bring that leftover pig carcass from the Independence Day party the day before!

We'll have access to the kitchen... but in the interest of keeping things clean and simple, it's probably best if you bring the food in pots which can be thrown on the stove, etc. We will have paper plates & such, but bringing ladles and other serving items will get you mad props from the Eth-Meister
