Sustenance for the Soul: Spiritual Exploration
"Exploring Our UU Identity"
Tuesday, August 31, 7:00 PM
First Parish In Cambridge

So you're a UU -- or at least, you're entertaining the idea! :) What does that mean to you? What does it mean to others? How are we in community with others? How does our history affect us?

This Tuesday, we'll do some loosely structured activities to help us share and explore what it means for you, me and us to be Unitarian Universalists.

See you Tuesday!

Stories for the Soul -- Community Building

What: Community Building
Where: Barn Room
When: Tonight, Sept. 7th, 7 PM
Who: Me and you and anyone that wants to!

Anyone who's ever been to a Sustenance for the Soul meeting before knows how fun it is to tell stories and to listen to others' stories. The theme for this season's Community Building is tentatively Stories for the Soul. During this first meeting of the season, we'll be playing a variety of cheesy and entertaining games to learn more about each other. We'll also share and listen to some cool stories about each other. This won't be Spiritual Discussion, in which we excavate deep subjects of spiritual and political and personal importance, but a more lighthearted exploration of the stories
that exist all around us, even in the most insignificant of objects.

If you would like to prepare, please bring a small object that has some sort of meaning or interest for you...an article of clothing, a piece of jewelry, a coin, an heirloom, a fortune from a cookie, whatever. We'll be doing an activity with them that should spark some cool stories.

Time: 7pm
Location:Barn Room

Friday, September 10

End of summer ice cream!

No, chilly autumn has not overtaken us yet! Might anyone be interested in getting together this Friday (09.10) for ice cream? Possible ice cream locales include (and you're going to have to deal with my spelling on this) Toscanini's (Harvard Square), Herrell's (Harvard Square), Christina's (Inman Square - 20 minutes down the street from Harvard), etc.

So, if you're not otherwise occupied, why don't we meet up on the steps of the church at, say, 7:30pm. We can decide which ice cream establishment to patronize from there.

Also, if folks want to get together earlier for dinner, feel free to organize that!

Spritual Discussion - "Work"

On Labor day, you probably thought about work, jobs, and unions.
Tonight, however, I want to focus on the other kinds of work that we do -- work that we might not even call work since it takes other forms.

I remember being much younger and looking at adults for whom "fun" took the form of a wide assortment of laborious activities. Some people seemed to actually enjoy mowing the lawn, cooking, or other mundane activities. To my pre-teen mind, this was a sign that adults were a sad, sad lot, and that growing older was surely some form of mind warping.

So, here I am, seemingly adult and engaged in the must-keep-busy urban lifestyle. When I volunteer, I enjoy washing dishes, stacking chairs, or serving food. Sometimes, I even enjoy a good planning meeting. =) These are 'work', but they are not our jobs; they are not for money.

My question is: why do we do it? Why do we sometimes exhaust ourselves to have fun? We'll take a chance to listen and articulate just why these things are important to us, and how perhaps they play into things such as faith, mindfulness, and personal values.
