Multi-Day Events |
About the calendar These are currently planned young adult group and selected church wide events. Newcomers are always welcome to events. If you have any questions please contact the listed contact or youngadults@firstparishcambridge.org. The calendar is subject to change so check back here and watch the YAG announcement list. For more information on First Parish chuch wide events, visit the church's site. Interested in hosting an event? Please take quick read through how to host an event. Childcare is provided upon request with 10 days notice for events at the church. The church office provides a list of approved childcare providers. There is no charge to the parent. You are encouraged to use this service by contacting the appropriate event host, who will make arrangements with the church office. | ||||||
Sunday, August 26 Plum Island Beach & Birdwatching Trip Leave immediately after church; approx. 45 min. drive; bring lunch to have on the beach. We will organize carpooling when it gets closer to the time. Plan for early to late afternoon on the beach, then either head on home or go on an optional add-on birdwatching trip. The trip will be a total of about a mile walking over flat ground through saltwater marsh, freshwater marsh, and deciduous forest. Expect to see shorebirds and migrating songbirds; this part also led by Dave Dersham.

- August 27, Sunday, 4pm: John Sawyer's Place - "The Muppets Take Brazil" Come see a double feature: Terry Gilliam's 80s classic, "Brazil" (DVD, director's cut), followed by "The Muppet Movie". The idea is to see a really great and depressing movie followed by the ultimate good times flick. We'll be ordering food in between movies (or you may bring your own). Call John for directions. Wednesday, September 5 Intergenerational Men's Discussion Group What do our bodies do for us? How do our bodies fit into our self image? Do you like your body the way it is? Would you rather change it? Has it changed? Is it a temple? A source of pleasure or pain or both? Do you compare yourself to other men? What judgments do we make about people based on their bodies, or about ourselves based on our own bodies? Do you have any tips for others who might want to buff up? Do you find yourself attractive?

Wednesday, September 19 Intergenerational Women's Discussion Group We'll be watching a video called "Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom" and possibly a piece from "The Wisdom of Menopause". These are talks by Dr. Christiane Northrup, an ob/gyn who has some interesting perspectives on the mind/body connection and women's health, wellness, and self-image issues. The directions in which our discussion may go after viewing the video could be many. I hope to see you there! The Women's Discussion Group is an intergenerational group that meets once a month to discuss issues of common interest, including topics such as: relationships, health, sex & sexuality, transitions, children, child-rearing, friendship, the idea of "home," money, traditional women's roles, what feminism means to us, the history of UU women, women's spirituality, and any other topics proposed by members of the group. We meet the third Wednesday of every month, from 7:00 to 9:00 pm, in the Chapel at First Parish. All who align themselves with the female gender are welcome.

Saturday, October 6 Apple Picking & Apple Cooking Come pick Cortlands, Macouns, Red and Yellow Delicious, Baldwins, and other varieties of apples in the beautiful setting of Nashoba Valley Winery in Bolton. Not only do they have gorgeous orchards on rolling hills, they also make their own award-winning wines. The orchards open for picking at 11 a.m., so you can either meet up with folks at First Parish at 10:30 to drive over, or meet the YAG there. (Directions can be found on their web site, www.nashobawinery.com, or call Jen). RSVP to indicate if you have a car or need a ride. After picking our apples, we will go to another location to try out some recipes for apple pie, apple crumble, apple tarts, applesauce, or any other apple-related dish you might be interested in. In case of inclement weather, please call Jen to find out if the event has been canceled.
