Boys Of Barak

Boys Of Baraka - Coolidge Corner Theatre
dir. Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady, documentary, 1h25m

Currently playing

A surprising and remarkable transformation occurs with a group of 12-year-old inner city American kids are transplanted to the wilds of Kenya. Sent there to join an experimental boarding school for at-risk youths, they find that once separated from drugs, violence, and troubled families, they flourish academically. Flmmakers Heidi Ewing & Rachel Grady observe the boys’ reactions to an alien environment where academics, the African plain, lizards, and homework take center stage. The humor and explicit truthfulness of these kids give insight into the tremendous obstacles they face both at home and in school, and yet they still retain an optimistic outlook.

From Baltimore to Africa and back again, BOYS OF BARAKA captures this amazing journey and reveals some unexpected truths about what really motivates America's disenfranchised children.

SftS: 5th Tues

Please come to this week's sustenance for the soul on Tuesday night
(gather at 7, begin at 7:30).

As this week is the fifth Tuesday of the month, I was told that
"anything goes" for our Spiritual Exploration (ok, well not anything,
but there are options... I had lots of FREEDOM to choose an area to
dive into). Soooo, I figured that I'd like people to go home having
had some fun, felt something meaningful, and stretched their brains a
bit. Well, hopefully at least one of those things will happen
tomorrow when we explore the theme, "FREEDOM."

If you come... here are some ADULT questions that you can gear up to
think about:
* Is freedom a right, or is it earned?
* How much freedom should people have to make mistakes?
* When is it ok to break the rules?

If you come... here are some KID-like things you may get to do:
* listen to a storybook being read
* play a game
* sing a song

It's going to be a great evening. Please join us! All are welcome!

SftS: Community Building

Hello, everyone.

This coming Tuesday, (Feb 7) I'm doing the community building workshop. I
work as a juggler, and a lot of people have expressed interest in this. I
also have a whole bunch of juggling balls lying around. So I thought I
would do a little juggling workshop. The focus here is to have fun, so
don't worry if you don't think you can learn. Most people are surprised at
how much they can learn. The bottom line is that throwing things is fun,
even if you don't catch them.

As usual, we will meet around 7, and begin officially at 7:30.

SftS: Spiritual Discussion-Love

Since tomorrow is Valentine's Day, it seems only fitting that our spiritual
discussion topic be -- you guessed it -- love. (No, I'm not brave enough to
pick the runner-up topic: sex) I'm planning on an open-ended "what is love?"
kind of discussion that's inclusive of love in its many forms: romantic,
communal, familial, spiritual, global, etc. -- whatever we WANT to talk
about, really.

In the meantime, I'll see if I can find some Unitarian-themed candy hearts,
e.g.:

"Baby, I affirm your inherent worth and dignity"
"Hot stuff (fairly traded)"
"Be mine (in a mutually respectful equal partnership sorta way)"
"Love Chakra"

:)

Look forward to seeing those of you who don't have other plans for the
evening tomorrow! (Come on -- other plans?!!)

As usual, we meet in the nursery upstairs at 7:00PM. Worship begins at 7:30.
Newcomers to First Parish are welcome to join us!

Games Night

Hi YAG folks,

I seem to vaguely remember agreeing at the last community building session
to host a games night this weekend, so, let's do it this Friday!

I'm thinking 7PM at my place. Bring your favorite board, strategy, or card
games to play. I'll provide drinks and some snacks -- and we can order pizza
or whatever if folks want dinner. In the past, we've played games like
Pirates Cove, Merchants of Amsterdam, and Zombies, which are slightly geeky
(like that rules out very many UUs) but lots of fun.

Since my apartment isn't HUGE, please RSVP and let me know if you are
planning to come, just so I have some idea of how many to expect. Friends
are welcome, too.

I live at 29 Winslow St, Apt 2 -- it's about a ten minute walk from Porter.
I also have some parking passes, if you'd prefer to drive. Map:

Let me know if you can make it!
