Welcome to YAG's social action web page! YAG participates in social
action activities put on by YAG members and by the church at
large. Any YAG member is welcome and encouraged to sponsor a social
action event or longer term project or just to let us know where in
the community our help is needed.
If you'd like to host a social action activity, please send an email to YAG's social action representatives at youngadults@firstparishcambridge.org and we'll add your activity to the web site. Also send an email to this address if you have a great idea but need some help figuring out how to make it happen, if you're interested in social action but aren't sure where to begin or what kinds of resources there are out there, or if you have questions about anything on this web site. YAG's social action representatives may be able to help or, if they can't, to put you in touch with someone who could.
In the past, YAG’s social action activities have included a food drive that benefited the Greater Boston Food Bank; serving meals at Rosie’s place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women; and volunteer farming.
For information about upcoming and past YAG-sponsored social-action events, please see past and current YAG event calendars.
Ongoing Project
YAG is currently instrumental in promoting the use of Fair Trade coffee in the church community.
For information about Fair Trade coffee and the work that Unitarian Universalists have done to promote its use, please see www.equalexchange.com/interfaith/uuscproject.html
Last fall, YAG volunteered to begin hosting church coffee hour after services on the third Sunday of every month. Volunteers brought treats as well as Fair Trade coffee to be served.
YAG still hosts coffee hour on the third Sunday of every month and volunteers are always needed to bring cookies, coffee cake, and other sweets. But now, as a result of the efforts of YAG and the church’s hospitality and finance committees, the church has switched to serving Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee at every coffee hour.
In addition, YAG has recently begun selling 12 oz. packages of Equal Exchange Fair Trade Coffee as well as fair trade cocoa on the third Sunday of every month.
