Walden Pond and Fireworks
Hi there, Long-Weekend-Enthusiasts! So, this morning Marcus and I discussed the 4th. It seems that we sent out our messages at a very similar time and didn't realize the other had sent out an e-mail. But we decided that great minds think alike - notice the striking similarities in our "independent" plans... Here's the deal: 11am - meet at Porter Square (Shaw's parking lot) for rides to Walden Pond. Marcus is contacting a couple of you who can provide rides 11:45am - arrive at Walden Pond (notice the extra time built in here). More specifically, if people are meeting us, we're likely parking in the parking lot at the high school down the road. We'll likely be at the far side of the pond (not the crazy full side) and stay for several hours. Picnics and munchies welcome! 5ish - 7: time in the Boston/Cambridge area to pick up food, change out of your bathing suit, etc. 7pm - Evening activities begin. We'll meet at the church at 7pm and head over to the MIT side of the river. 7:30pm - Meet others by Building #2 at MIT. Hopefully we'll be sitting out blankets, chatting and settling down for a PICNIC dinner shortly. High school parking lot location: If you're coming from the east, heading west, on Rt. 2 you'll come to the intersection of Rt. 2 (aka Concord Turnpike) and Walden Street. The pond is to the left. So are all the cars. But you want to take a right. The Concord-Carlisle High School is maybe 0.3 miles down before the fork in the road. Location at Walden: Like I said, we'll be at the FAR side of the pond. i.e. not on the Walden Street side. Feel free to trek through the woods to get there. And, yes, it is very likely that some ranger like person will say "sorry - too many people - the pond's closed". To which you can make up some story or maybe say "but I'm meeting people who are waiting for me"... Go nuts. Special note: There are no restrooms on the far side of the pond. The bottom of the pond is very mushy. Water is fairly warm (compared to the beach in Hull, MA - where I was on Thursday). And some of us (like me) will likely decide to swim across (so feel free to join if you're a decent swimmer). Location at the Charles River: Why don't we plan to meet along Memorial Drive at MIT Building #2? No, I don't have a street address. Basically, head down Mass Ave, make a right onto Memorial drive, and we can meet near building #2. For more info. We won't necessarily sit at that location all evening, but we can meet there. If you are coming later, feel free to call me on my cell phone. Or look for balloons as we'll try to have a few balloons out to me it easier to find us. Hope to see you all then! And, as mentioned before, friends are welcome. (If you're bringing a friend to Walden, please let Marcus know so that we can plan accordingly re: cars.) Questions, comments? Let me know!

Guy Mendilow concert
Oh, oh, oh! Very cool concert on Friday. It's world folk music. Including two-tone throat singing. I've seen Guy before and he's awsome! Who's intersted in coming? I'd suggest we meet by the church at, say, 6:40 and get on the bus. Any takers? Kendra Free Outdoor Concert at the Cambridge Multicultural Art Center (Cambridge, MA) This Friday, July 15th, 7pm
Guy and trio return to the Cambridge Multicultural Art Center for a special outdoor performance as part of CMAC~Rs Summer Outdoor Concert Series.
July 15th, 7:00pm Cambridge Multicultural Art Center 41 Second Street, Cambridge MA Free (617) 577-1400 http://www.cmacusa.org
"Mendilow is no dilettante - he learned the music of these countries by living and working there - so when he sings about a massacre by paramilitaries in Chiapas, he knows what he's talking about. Given the lack of content in so much pop music today, it's encouraging to hear someone continuing in the time-honored troubadour tradition - traveling the world, bringing the news."
-BOSTON PHOENIX, 2005 BEST MUSIC POLL (GUY MENDILOW VOTED BOSTON'S BEST LOCAL WORLD MUSIC ACT)
By Bus: 1) From Harvard Square, Cambridge, take the #69 bus down Cambridge Street toward the Cambridge Courthouse. 2) Get off at the intersection of Cambridge Street and Third Street (by the courthouse). 3) Walk down 1/2 a block toward the Lechmere subway stop (or toward Boston). 4) Take a right onto Second Street. 5) The entrance to CMAC (41 Second Street) is 1 1/2 blocks on the right.

Swing Dancing
In honor of my last free friday before my first show opens next week, i want to go swing dancing this friday night. So who is interested in joining me?
This friday the Hot Cat Jazz Band is playing (and Swing City is always more fun when there is a band). Swing City is located at the MT. Auburn VFW Post, at 688 Huron Ave, Cambridge.
There is an introductory class at 7:30 and open dancing is from 8:30 to 12:30. The cost is $12, $10 with a student ID.
I've been a bunch of times, and always had a blast. The first time i went, i had never danced before, and they show you how to start with their lesson that gets you up and dancing in no time. People of all dancing levels come to this thing, from those who have never danced before (as i hadn't) to those who do this every week. It can be a lot of fun.
I'm not sure what my plans are. I'm not sure if i'm gonna go to the lesson or not, but: if you are interested in going, get in touch with me and i can make a more official meeting time, plan driving, and all those other organizational things that might need to be done.

SftS: Social Justice and Fair Trade
Hi there chocolate lovers, hot beverage consumers, and gift buyers!
You've read about it in the paper, heard about it in the news, consumed it at church and have seen it in your local store. The New York City Coucil recently passed a resolution that encouraged its use. It's served at the US Senate, House of Representatives, World Bank, major universities - and half of all UU churches.
But what exactly *is* fair trade? What does that mean? Why is it important? And what are some of the hot issues today?
Come join us on Tuesday evening (arrive at 7ish, begin at 7:30) to learn more about and discuss fair trade.
Like always, we'll be meeting at the church upstairs in the nursery.
Hope to see you then!

Contra Dancing
We'll be going Contra Dancing this Thursday at the VFW hall near Fresh Pond. The dance is from 8-11 and costs $7. For those unfamiliar with them, Contras are danced in long lines which you gradually move up and down, dancing with everyone. The dances are usually reasonably fast and involve a fair amount of spinning in a circle with another person. Contra Dances are easy for beginners to learn, since all the dances are taught before hand.
More information here: http://www.neffa.org/Thurs.html
The VFW is somewhat hard to get to without a car, so if you need a ride, let me know.

Hamlet
This Sunday, August 31, night i'm going to go see the free production of Hamlet that is being put on by the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company in the Boston Common.
The show is at 7pm, and i was thinking of going for an early dinner in china town (i love this little vietnamese restaurant called "Pho Pasteur" -- which i don't think is related to the chain of the same name). I was thinking 5:30 might be a good time for dinner in order to do both.
So please give me a call at home to let me know if have interest in joining me. Or we'll just meet up somewhere in the seating area in front of the stage: look for fellow yaggers, or start claiming space if others aren't there yet.
I've been to a lot of these shows over the last few years and they have been a lot of fun, so i hope some of you will join me.
