MFA night
There will be a YAG trip to the Museum of Fine Arts this Wednesday, September 28th. We will meet at 7 PM outside the west entrance--the one by the coat check, with the modern sculpture out front. Admission is free on Wed. nights and although certain exhibits close early, there should be enough open to keep us busy. There was some talk of meeting at six. While this doesn't work for me, people are welcome to get to the museum early or meet for dinner beforehand. Let me know if you are interested.

Carmen
Opera fans! Come join me in seeing Carmen at the ART this Friday evening at 8. All the seats for the remaining performances are sold out, but student rush tickets ( 2 available per Student ID at $15 each ) are still available if you don't mind standing. We need to be in line at the box office to purchase the tickets half an hour before the performance (7:30), but given the limited number of tickets available (20), it couldn't hurt to be even earlier. The Loeb Drama Center is located on the corner of Brattle St. and Appian Way in Cambridge.
See you there!

Maine Retreat
Hey folks,
I'm running off out of town this weekend, but I just wanted you all to know that the 'scales have been tipped' -- More people can make it to the retreat if it's held on the later weekend, so that's when we'll have it. We'd be leaving around 5PM on Saturday the 8th, returning sometime Monday afternoon the 10th. We may be able to arrange an early ride on Monday if there is a need.
When I get back on Sunday I'll send out more info to the folks who have expressed interest. If you're interested, please let me know ASAP so I can email you with forthcoming details (so I don't have to bother everyone on this email list with all the details.)
Thanks, Ethan
---------
Hi folks,
At the Community Building session tonight, people talked about possibly being interested in a small, informal, fall retreat for YAG. I offered up a possibility which at least a few people were potentially interested in: a weekend retreat at my family cabin up in western Maine on the weekend of September 30 - October 2. So, if you're free that weekend and are interested in a rustic, woodsy weekend away from the city, read on!
THE GOOD STUFF: * In the middle of the Blue Mountains in western Maine * The leaves will be starting to change color around then * Full Milky Way galaxy visible * Cabin right by the lake (too cold for swimming -- but not canoeing!) * Huge granite fireplace * A full century of Field family history * Sleeps 9-10 relatively comfortably, more if you like to snuggle. * Low cost - just your share of food & gas to get there * Minimal 'programming' - outdoorsy stuff, guitar singalongs, worship, discussions * Departure/return times are flexible, we'll decide on that once we know who's going.
THE ROUGH STUFF: * It'll be cold. The lows will be in the low 40s, possibly 30s. * The camp has no insulation, so it'll be like you're camping outside (though heavy/electric blankets are available.) The fireplace will have to be stoked regularly at night. * (Probably) no running water. The water is pumped from the lake, and the pump will likely already be shut off for the winter so the lines don't freeze. I'll look into this, but otherwise it will be carrying buckets up from the lake, and bucket-bathing.
Still interested? Email me ASAP so I can figure out if there's enough interest to go ahead with it. Once I have enough potential folks, we'll figure out specifics of timing, transportation, food, what to bring, etc. Feel free to bring sweethearts, etc.
Let me know! Ethan
P.S. For folks who 'just gotta know': it's in Weld, ME -- on the opposite side of Lake Webb from Weld center.

MirrorMask
I'm planning to go see "MirrorMask" tonight at the Kendall Square Cinema. It's kind of a Dark Crystal/Labyrinth/Alice in Wonderland -esque fantasy flick by Dave McKean and Neal Gaiman. Showtime is at 7:20. It had been scheduled to run for only one week, but I guess there was enough demand to keep it around for a little bit longer :-)

Kozol lecture
Askwith Education Forum - Shame of the Nation Noted author, Jonathan Kozol, will speak about his latest book, The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America, and the re-segregation of America's schools. In his book Kozol argues that the public education offered to black and Hispanic students in our nation's impoverished urban schools is inferior, that despite the federal government's reports of progress, our educational system is actually regressing. This forum is co-sponsored with the Cambridge Forum and the Harvard Book Store. All Askwith Education Forums are free and open to the general public. Tickets are not necessary, unless otherwise noted. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Sara's Birthday Party
DEPARTMENT OF SENESCENCE NOVEMBER COMPANY, 4TH BATTALION, 24TH ANNUAL AUXILLARY CAMBRIDGE, MA 02140
MEMORANDUM FOR RECORD
SUBJECT: Sara's Birthday Party
Hello YAG and Affiliates:
It's almost November, which means that I'm almost another year older. …. I don't know what my 24th year will have in store for me, but I have a sneaky suspicion that my immediate future might include margaritas, among other alcoholic beverages. You are cordially invited to my house on Friday, November 4th for a night of veggie munchies, classy drinks, and stupid party games. Since I'm practically ancient, this year's fete will be low-key.
AGAIN: You are all invited to SARA'S 24th BIRTHDAY PARTY on Friday, November 4th (Real birthday Nov 3rd).
I am one block from the Porter Square T in Cambridge, MA. Mapquest "67 Mt Vernon St, Cambridge, MA 02140.."
I don't want anything for my birthday except your presence chez moi. You are welcome to bring friends/girlfriends/boyfriends/spouses, if they haven't already been invited.
